Kittens, Shadee's first litter

Kittens, Shadee's first litter :)

I have always wanted a litter Bengals and when I decided to work part time this became possible. We received permission from Shadee’s  breeder to have  one litter of kittens with her and I went on a course to learn the general  knowledge of cats. In my later blogs I will write about this this process and my experiences. We furnished a room for Shadee and her kittens with several soft baskets and a specially handmade “birthchest”.   Shadee is a Bengal with a mind of her own and chose her litterbox to have the kittens in so i immediately got rid of the litterbox. I tried to interest her in the specially made chest, but she chose a basket….

During the birth of the first kitten, Shadee’s  behaviour changed dramatically, she was very nervous and restless, but when her first kitten was born her instinct took over. She bit the umbilical cord and started to wash het kitten. She did this very thorough, her kitten acted according his instinct and searched her nipple. Both of them were very active, mother to wash and son to eat, the kitten won. J He was quickly able to find the nipple, because he could smell it and he went straight forwards, he climbed over his mother’s head, down via her face and underneath her breast. There it was, his nipple, he started drinking while his sister was being born.

The birth of the kittens was very emotional, it was an amazing experience which I will never forget. They were the most beautiful kittens and I couldn’t stop admiring them. They made soft suckling sounds and they were content.
The next morning the situation had changed and our happy kittens were very restless and they were making squeaking noises. I was desperate and asked my friend Marja to help me.She came and recognised the problem, Shadee didn’t have enough milk! :(

Fortunately we were able to assist Shadee in feeding her kittens and we proceeded to feed them every two hours.
The kittens didn’t like leaving their mothers milkbar evenwith the shortage of milk. It was warm, soft and most important there was there mother’s smell. They were squeaking and moving restless and making their mother very worried. Those tiny kittens didn’t want to leave their mothers milkbar, but they were so very hungry. They also didn’t like that strange thing they have to suckle, it definitely didn’t smell and didn’t taste like mummy. But they were very hungry and after few attempts they liked our special Babycat milk. We were over the moon, showed Shadee her satisfied kitten, laid it back and left her room to do a victory dance. :) :)

For two weeks we had very intimate meetings with the kittens, we talk with, sing lullabies for them cuddle and kiss them. Shadee saw it, liked what she saw and  was happy and so were we.

Have a Happy Bengal day :)
